The 4th of July is fast approaching, so why not get a head
start on some firework safety?
Fireworks are very loud, and may scare you, but don’t be scared, the
noise won’t hurt you. If you are scared of the noise ask mom or dad to
cover your ears or perhaps get you some ear plugs.
Fireworks are very pretty and fun to watch, but are also very dangerous!
Fireworks are a type of explosive, and should only be handled, and lit
by a adult. Some other things to remember are:
Always
read and follow label directions.
Buy from reliable sellers.
Use outdoors
ONLY!
At no time should a firecracker be lit in a home or closed in building.
It could catch on fire and you could be seriously hurt!
ALWAYS
have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket)
NEVER
experiment or make your own fireworks.
Light one at a time.
NEVER
re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15-20 minutes then soak in a bucket of
water.)
Dispose of the fireworks properly by soaking them in a bucket of water
and then disposing them in a trashcan.
NEVER
point or throw fireworks at other people.
NEVER
carry fireworks in your pocket.
NEVER
shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
The shooter should always wear eye protections and never have any part
of the body over the firework.
Stay away from illegal explosives, such as bottle rockets.

Burns
If you happen to get burned by fireworks, immediately tell your parent
or guardian or another adult.
If the burn is minor, run the burned area under cool water to prevent
further burning and damage to the layers of skin.
DO NOT
put butter on the burn. It will only trap heat in and cause more damage.
If a blister forms, do not pop it.
If the burn is severe, report to the nearest medical facility for
treatment.

We at the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department hope you enjoy your 4th
of July. Have a fun and safe holiday!
